Each year Neighborhood Connections delivers nearly 20,000 meals, improving the health and well-being of dozens of local seniors. Meals on Wheels keeps high-risk older adults, who often have chronic health conditions, safer and healthier in their own homes. Volunteers deliver more than nutritious meals: their in-person visits create a trusting relationship that helps reduce social isolation and loneliness, and their ‘extra set of eyes and ears’ ensures that our most vulnerable residents are receiving a regular ‘check in.”
All menus are reviewed by a registered dietician to ensure that they meet the nutritional requirements of older adults; carrying trays are labeled, sealed, and both microwavable and oven-safe. All meals are diabetic-friendly and low-salt; in addition, medically-tailored meals are available for those requiring gluten-free, lactose-free, renal-safe, mechanical soft, or vegetarian options. A person is eligible for Meals on Wheels if they are 60 or over and unable to obtain or prepare meals on a temporary or permanent basis due to a physical or mental condition (either ongoing or temporary), a lack of or inadequate facilities to prepare meals, or inability to shop, cook, or prepare meals safely. Their spouses and caregivers (of any age) are also eligible. In addition, those under 60 years of age living with a disability may receive meals. Neighborhood Connections delivers meals in Andover, Jamaica, Landgrove, Londonderry, Stratton, Townshend, Wardsboro, Weston, Windham, Winhall, and the Popple Dungeon section of Chester. In general, those wishing to register themselves or their loved ones for meals should call Senior Solutions for about a 20-minute intake, at 802-885-2669. They will then be referred to Neighborhood Connections to start delivery. Those under 60 and disabled should call the Vermont Center for Independent Living at 802-224-1825 for their intake interview. For urgent start requests, such as with a hospital discharge or sudden medical issue, first call us directly at 802-824-4343 to initiate next-day start-ups. |
